The Sugarhill Gang launched recorded hip-hop with their 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight," a multi-platinum seller created to capitalize on a novelty. Producer Sylvia Robinson noticed the popularity of New York block parties and assembled Master Gee, Wonder Mike, and Big Bank Hank to record the single. "Rapper's Delight," which sampled Chic's "Good Times," sold over eight million copies worldwide. Despite initial success, the group faded by the mid-'80s, returning in 1999 with a children's rap album, Jump on It, proving rap's enduring appeal beyond their early contributions.
