Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton rose from Queens to become hip-hop royalty, pioneering a new era for women in the genre. As the First Ladies of Hip-Hop, they brought fun, fashion, and femininity to the scene, making them relatable to women everywhere. Before they met, Salt lived in Bushwick, Brooklyn, while Pepa, originally from Jamaica, grew up in St. Albans, Queens. Their love for hip-hop ignited at block parties and street performances, eventually bringing them together at Queensborough Community College. Their journey began when producer Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor formed a group called Super Nature and created “The Showstopper,” a response track to Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew’s “The Show.” Released in 1985, the song caught the attention of DJ Marley Marl, who played it on WBLS’s “Rap Attack.” The group, later renamed Salt-N-Pepa, soon welcomed Deidra “Spinderella” Roper as their official DJ. Only 16 at the time and raised in Brooklyn, Spinderella went on to become the most celebrated female DJ in hip-hop. Together, Salt-N-Pepa broke barriers, changing the game for women in hip-hop and leaving a lasting legacy in the music industry.
