Run-D.M.C. revolutionized hip-hop, shaping its sound and style more than any other group. As pioneers of hardcore rap, they introduced spare beats and heavy metal samples, setting the tone for the next decade. Their influence opened doors for both politicized rap like Public Enemy and gangsta rap like N.W.A. They also transitioned hip-hop from a singles-based genre to full-length albums. Hailing from Hollis, Queens, Joseph “Run” Simmons, Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels, and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell formed the group in the early ’80s. Their debut single, “It’s Like That”/“Sucker M.C.’s,” was a groundbreaking moment for hip-hop. By 1986, their fusion of rock and rap peaked with Raising Hell, featuring the iconic “Walk This Way.” Though later albums struggled against emerging hardcore rappers, Down With the King (1993) proved their lasting impact. They returned in 2000 with Crown Royal and toured with Aerosmith, but tragedy struck in 2002 when Jam Master Jay was murdered, marking the end of an era. His death was a stark reminder of the violence that plagued hip-hop, but Run-D.M.C.’s legacy remains, as they were the first to take rap into the mainstream, paving the way for future artists.
