Public Enemy revolutionized hip-hop with their politically charged, pro-Black rap and experimental sound. Formed in the early ’80s, the Long Island group gained recognition through the Super Spectrum City Mix Show and signed with Def Jam. The crew included Chuck D, Flava Flav, Professor Griff, Terminator X, and The Bomb Squad. Their debut, Yo! Bum Rush the Show (1987), and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988) introduced radical lyrics and chaotic beats. Their anthem, “Fight the Power,” became a symbol of Black protest, cementing their place in hip-hop history.
