In 1988, brothers Sen Dog and Mellow Man Ace tapped B-Real and DJ Muggs to form Devastating Vocal Excellence. When Ace left the group, the remaining members renamed themselves Cypress Hill.
Cypress Hill’s 1991 eponymous debut album hit No. 4 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and eventually went double platinum.
The trio’s 1993 album Black Sunday debuted at No. 1 and made Cypress Hill the first rap group to have two albums simultaneously in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200.
The smash single “Insane In the Brain” became a Top 20 pop hit and received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
In 1994, the group became a quartet with the addition of former Beastie Boys percussionist Eric “Bobo” Correa, who’d initially served as a tour drummer.
In 2018, Cypress Hill returned with Elephants on Acid, their first album in eight years. DJ Muggs produced the album while “dreaming of an out-of-body experience as a man with an elephant head.”
In 2019, they became the first Latino hip-hop group to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
