Kate McKinnon was born and raised in a small town in Long Island, New York. She would become involved in music from an early age and also show a talent for accents. She graduated from Columbia University in 2006 with a degree in theatre. Her goal was to enter comedy and acting, and she would later create the comedy group, Tea Party, that focused on musical improv. At Columbia, she would also work with several notable future actors, including Jenny Slate, Grace Parra, and Greta Gerwig.
In 2007, McKinnon would be asked to join Logo TV’s The Big Gay Sketch Show. She was a cast member all three seasons. Kate has also regularly performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City since 2008. In addition, she made appearances for voice acting in The Simpsons and Family Guy. She also voices the role of Ms. Frizzle in the reboot of the Magic School Bus kids show.
In 2012, Kate joined the cast of SNL as a featured player. She would be promoted to repertory player in season 39, just one year after she joined. She has been famous for her celebrity impressions, including Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Presidential election and Ellen DeGeneres, Justin Bieber, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Angela Merkel. Her return for the 46th season makes Kate McKinnon the longest-tenured female cast member, even beyond Cecily Strong and Aidy Bryant by only five episodes.
