Cecily Strong was born in Springfield, Illinois, but raised in Oak Park, just outside of the city of Chicago. She would grow up watching SNL and dream of being on the show one day. She was expelled from Oak Park and River Forest High School for bringing cannabis to school but later graduated from the Chicago Academy for the Arts. Then, she would begin to study at the California Institute of the Arts in 2006, where she earned her BFA in theatre.
After graduating, Strong would return to Chicago to join the Second City Conservatory and iO Chicago. She performed regularly with the two ensembles, even performing on a cruise ship with other Second City members for four months. She also appeared at several events for comedy in the Chicago area. In 2012, SNL hired her to join their cast as a featured player for their upcoming season.
Since then, Strong has been a member of the SNL cast as a repertory player, co-anchor of the Weekend Update with Colin Jost, and eventually replaced by Michael Che. She was nominated twice for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on SNL and has completed several impressions over the years, including Gloria Estefan, Dianne Feinstein, Ariana Grande, Sofia Vergara, and Melania Trump.
