Ashley Judd was born just outside of Los Angeles to country singers and motivational speaker parents. Throughout her childhood, she attended thirteen schools before college. She attended the University of Kentucky, majored in French, and minored in anthropology, art history, theater, and women's studies. She even studied abroad in France and would study acting with Robert Carnegie, who worked at Playhouse West. Before making it big, she would rent a home in Malibu and work as a hostess before moving back to Tennessee to be closer to her family.
Her first role would be in 1991 when she would appear as Ensign Robin Lefler, a Starfleet officer, in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. She would also have a recurring role on the NBC drama Sisters. Her first film role would be in Kuffs (1992). During the 1990s, she compiled role after role, earning more attention for her acting talent. She has starred in films such as the Divergent series, Flypaper, and Twisted in recent years.
Aside from acting, Ashley Judd is also highly active as a humanitarian. She has focused her efforts on gender equality and sexual/reproductive health for women and girls. She was appointed the Goodwill Ambassador for UNFPA, the United Nations agency that works in that area of focus. She has traveled worldwide for her work and continues to give speeches to elicit change for these global concerns.
