Rina Sawayama was born in Niigata, Japan. She would live there for only a few years before her family would move to London, where she would live and study as a student. She still lives there to this day. She studied at the Magdalene College in Cambridge, where she found her love for music and modeling. She would perform in a hip-hop group called the Lazy Lion with Theo Ellis from the band Wolf Alice in university.
In 2013, she would begin her solo career with "Sleeping in Waking." Over her career, she has released a studio album, one EP, and 18 singles. In addition, she has also released two promotional singles. Her album, Sawayama, would reach number eight on the US Heat chart. Additionally, she would also sign to act in the film John Wick: Chapter 4, in the role of Akira. The film will be released in 2022.
As a model, she signed to Elite Model Management and Anti-Agency. In 2017, she was asked to walk in the Versus x Versace fall-winter campaign. She has also walked the runway for Balmain to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Olivier Rousteing being the head of the French House. As for her collaborations, Sawayama has worked with John Yuyi, a Taiwanese visual artist, on a visual series to critique Asian expectations for beauty. She was even profiled for Vogue and discussed this topic with the magazine.
