While hip-hop was dominated by Public Enemy's political rap and N.W.A.'s gangsta rap, Digital Underground emerged from Oakland with a funky homage to Parliament-Funkadelic. Built on P-Funk samples, their music and style, led by Shock-G, featured outrageous costumes and alter egos, most famously Humpty Hump with his Groucho Marx nose and goofy voice. Their 1990 debut, Sex Packets, was an instant hit due to "The Humpty Dance." Notably, their 1991 EP, This Is an E.P. Release, introduced Tupac Shakur, who initially danced with Digital Underground before his solo career.
