Nominees for the 2024 Grammy Awards have been revealed, with Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, Lana Del Rey, boygenius, Miley Cyrus, Foo Fighters, and Arctic Monkeys leading the way.
Taylor Swift secured six nominations, including Album of the Year for Midnights. “Anti-Hero” is up for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, while her collaboration with Ice Spice, “Karma,” is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Swift has won 12 Grammys to date, including three Album of the Year trophies for Fearless, 1989, and folklore. If Midnights does prove victorious, she will become the first artist to win Album of the Year four times.
SZA leads all of this year’s contenders with a total of nine nominations. Her album, SOS, is nominated for Album of the Year, and “Kill Bill” is up for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Speaking of Bridgers, she received eight nominations, including seven for her work with boygenius. The group also featuring Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker saw their debut album, the record, nominated for Album of the Year and their song “Not Strong Enough” nominated for Record of the Year.
boygenius’ the record is also nominated for Alternative Music Album of the Year alongside Arctic Monkeys’ The Car, Lana Del rey’s Did you know there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, Gorillaz’s Cracker Island, and PJ Harvey’s I Inside the Old Year Dying.
Olivia Rodrigo received six nominations in total, with her sophomore LP, GUTS, in contention for Album of the Year and “Vampire” up for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Most interesting, Rodrigo’s “Ballad of a Homeschool Girl” is nominated for Best Rock Song alongside The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, and Queens of the Stone Age.
Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus also received six nominations a piece, while Lana Del Rey is up for trophies in five categories. On the rock front, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, and Metallica each received three nominations. Rising country artist Zach Bryan also received a trio of nominations.
Other noteworthy nominees include Aphex Twin, who is nominated for Best Dance/Electronica Recording; Dolly Parton, who is nominated for Best Country Solo Pop Performance; Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, who are nominated for Best Americana Album; and Joni Mitchell, whose recent live set, Joni Mitchell at Newport, is nominated for Best Folk Album. Also of note: Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum received his first-ever Grammy nomination for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.
One genre that received no love from the Recording Academy? K-pop, which failed to secure a single nomination.
Now in its 66th year, the Grammys recognize the best albums, songs, and music released between the eligibility period (October 1st, 2022 – September 15th, 2023).
The 2024 Grammy Awards will take place on February 4th, 2024 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The event will be aired live on CBS and Paramount+.
New category this year include the additions of Best Pop Dance Recording, Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best African Music Performance. Other changes involve the number of overall nominees in the “Big Four” categories (Album, Record, Song, and Best New Artist) being reduced from ten to eight. On the topic of AI, “only human creators are eligible to be submitted for consideration for, nominated for, or win a Grammy Award. A work that contains no human authorship is not eligible in any categories.”
