Often dismissed as a novelty group, Ween is known for eclectic records that range from radio-friendly rock to country to lo-fi experiments, as well as their marathon live performances.
At a 1990 live show when the band had trash thrown at them, early supporter Henry Rollins got onstage and demanded that the audience give them respect.
In late 1990, Ween released the debut album GodWeenSatan: The Oneness, a sprawling, two-LP set issued by the legendary Minnesota label Twin/Tone Records.
Their 1992 single, “Push Th’ Little Daisies” became an alternative rock radio hit, thanks to an appearance on MTV’s Beavis and Butt-head.
12 Golden Country Greats, the band’s 1996 album, featured The Jordanaires and Bobby Ogdin, both famous for playing in Elvis Presley’s backing band.
The creator of Spongebob Squarepants, Stephen Hillenburg, said that his show was inspired by Ween’s 1997 album, The Mollusk.
After 27 years together, Ween called it quits in 2012, having played more than 800 shows and releasing 8 albums and 14 EPs.
For the group’s 2016 reunion tour, they found themselves playing to larger audiences than ever, moving up to arenas and headlining major music festivals.
