Timnit Gebru is an American computer scientist who currently works on algorithmic bias and data mining. She is best known for her advocating of diversity in technology, and she is the co-founder of Black in AI, where Black researchers work together on creating artificial intelligence (AI). Born in Ethiopia, she was raised there with her father, who was an electrical engineer, and her mother, an economist. Her father would pass away when she was five. When she was fifteen, during the Eritrean-Ethiopian War, she would flee after her family was deported and compelled to fight.
Initially denied a visa to the US, she would remain in Ireland until she got political asylum from the US. She was miserable until she settled in Somerville, Massachusetts, where she would attend high school and face significant discrimination. Some of the teachers refused to show her more about Advanced Placement courses, even though she more than qualified for the tests. She would complete high school and she would be accepted into Stanford University. She would study electrical engineering, earning up to her Master’s. She would also earn her PhD from the university in 2017. She was advised by none other than Fei-Fei Li during her time working on her doctorate.
During her career, Gebru worked as an intern for Apple while at Stanford. She would also be offered a full-time position there, and she would work as an audio engineer. She would also leave the position to pursue further research on data mining with Fei-Fei Li. Gebru would eventually join Microsoft as a postdoctoral researcher in Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI (FATE) lab. She has also worked with Google, where she studied the ethics of artificial intelligence with Dr. Margaret Mitchell. Today, she works with Black in AI to highlight critical issues for the future and how people need to prepare for the challenges of AI.
