Tiffany Haddish was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, California. After her mother suffered a horrible accident, Haddish would discover her gift for comedy at a young age, making people laugh to assist her daily life. Haddish would struggle in school but would still win contests where she presented Shakespearean monologues at her high school. At the age of seventeen, her social worker was given a choice to go to psychiatric therapy or attend Laugh Factory Comedy Camp. She opted for comedy, which skyrocketed her to her new career path.
Haddish would receive mentorship for other notable comedians at the Comedy Camp, like Dane Cook, Richard Pryor, Charles Fleischer, and the Wayans brothers. Tiffany states that comedy saved her life and it gives her a safe space. Haddish was initially accepted to attend New York University but could not participate due to high tuition costs. She would instead participate in Santa Monica College, working several jobs and living in her car before she had her big break in the world of comedy.
Tiffany’s first big break was in the comedy competition in Bill Bellamy’s Who’s Got Jokes? After this, she was featured on several T.V. shows, earning her first role in If Loving You is Wrong. Haddish has also starred in films such as Girls Trip alongside Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah. She became the first African-American female comedian to host Saturday Night Live in November of 2017. Her first leading role was in The Last O.G. alongside Tracy Jordan, and she has starred in several other films and shows since then.
