Spanish Harlem Orchestra, founded in 2000 by producer Aaron Luis Levinson and bandleader Oscar Hernandez, pays homage to the golden era of Latin jazz big bands like Tito Puente’s. Hernandez, known for his work with Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, and Paul Simon, leads the ever-evolving group with a traditional setup: piano, bass, percussion trio, five-piece horn section, and three male vocalists led by Ray de la Paz. Their debut, Un Gran Día en el Barrio (2002), blended classic and original salsa. They played major festivals in 2003 and won a Grammy for their 2004 album Across 110th Street. Subsequent albums include United We Swing (2006), featuring Paul Simon, and Viva La Tradición (2010).
