Singer Rob Thomas is one of the most commercially successful songwriters of his generation. He’s racked up hits with his band Matchbox Twenty, as a solo artist, and as a writer for other artists.
• Matchbox Twenty grew out of the remnants of Thomas’s previous band, Tabitha’s Secret, which he formed in 1993. Matchbox 20 have released four studio albums, starting with their 1996 debut, Yourself or Someone Like You. All of them made the Top 10, and 2012’s North reached No. 1.
• Thomas co-wrote Santana’s 1999 monster hit “Smooth.” The song won three Grammys and spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
• His 2005 solo debut album, ... Something to Be, features contributions from John Mayer, Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell, Dr. Dre protege Mike Elizondo, and Matchbox Twenty bandmate Kyle Cook. The album reached the top of the Billboard 200 and yielded his biggest solo single, “Lonely No More.”
• Thomas wrote three songs on Willie Nelson’s 2002 album The Great Divide. He has also written for Mick Jagger, Marc Anthony, Daughtry, and Travis Tritt.
• In 2004, the Songwriters Hall of Fame recognized Thomas with its first Hal David Starlight Award, for songwriters “making a significant impact in the music industry” with original songs.
• Thomas has occasionally appeared in fictional TV series. He played a version of himself as a patient in rehab on the fourth season of the comedy show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in 2008, and he had a guest part in the Season Two finale of iZombie in 2015, where his character was killed.
• In 2012, Thomas advised CeeLo Green’s team on Season Three of the reality competition The Voice.
