The Red Hot Chili Peppers have long embodied the sunny yet gritty essence of L.A., a duality rooted in their 1983 fusion of punk and funk. Frontman Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, guitarist Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons initially carved their niche with chaotic energy and humor, but Slovak’s death in 1988 and Irons’ departure reshaped the band.
