In 1994, Thomas Lauderdale, a Portland, Oregon native working in politics, grew frustrated with the uninspiring music at political fundraisers. Drawing from global genres like classical, jazz, and pop, he founded Pink Martini to create beautiful, inclusive soundtracks for events supporting causes such as civil rights, education, and the environment. In 1995, he invited Harvard classmate China Forbes to join. Their first song, “Sympathique,” became a French sensation and a workers’ anthem. Lauderdale describes Pink Martini as an American band embodying the country’s diversity and promoting unity through music worldwide.
