Nan Goldin, born Nancy Goldin, is an American photographer and activist. She’s known for exploring the subcultures of the LGBTQ+ culture and she’s also been known for photographing moments of intimacy, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and the opioid epidemic. Her most famous work that people recognize is The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, which is a slide show that was released in 1986. This slide show documented her post-Stonewall gay subculture exploration, even amongst her family and her friends.
Goldin is one of the founding members of the P.A.I.N., also known as Prescription Addiction Intervention Now. She lives between New York City, Berlin, and Paris, but her roots begin in the nation’s capital. She was born and raised on the east coast, spending her time between D.C. and Boston. They would ultimately move to Lexington when she was in her teens and she would have early exposure to themes and topics relating to sexuality, which she would experience at a young age due to her older sister, Barbara’s suicide when Nan was only 11. This would impact her deeply, and photography became her outlet and also her way of speaking about what matters the most.
Using her photography and her activism, Nan Goldin would take photographic journeys through portions of cities where the LGBTQ+ individuals resided. For years, this was photographing drag queens to show them as human and as another gender aside from what people might expect. She would travel around, exploring New York and also exploiting her travels in her photography. She is well known for her slide shows, where she has shared content from the 1970s and onward, highlighting and educating people on the importance of these people gaining more visibility.
