Faith Ringgold is a well-known American painter, writer, mixed media sculptor, and performance artist. She is best known for her narrative quilts that she is created. She was born in Harlem in New York City in 1930, where she would grow up and eventually go to the City College of New York to major in art education. She would marry Robert Earl Wallace and they would have two children together by 1952. In 1955, she would receive her bachelor’s degree and go to work in the New York City public school system.
When she was traveling in the 1950s and early 1960s, Faith would encounter narrative quilts come up and she would be inspired by the art that she visited in these nations. However, she would arrive home to mourn the death of her brother in 1961 and marry Burdette Ringgold in 1962. Since then, her artistic skill has significantly varied from paintings to quilts to performances and even to children's books. As an educator, she has taught in elementary schools, high schools, and even at the college level, but she would quit in 1973 to devote time to creating art full time.
Faith Ringgold is inspired in her art by James Baldwin, Amiri Baraka, and several aspects of African art, impressionism, and Cubism. She would also be inspired by the events of the civil rights movement and the women's movement and the Harlem Renaissance as well. She would change the quilts in the 1970s and travel with her daughter Michele to visit Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. This is where she would get the inspiration to create her own quotes inspired by those that she saw in the Rijksmuseum.
Over the course of our life, FaithRinggold has become a well-known artist, in her performance art has become amongst one of the most celebrated. During the 1970s and 1960s, she would create a significant amount of artwork that would reflect on racism and oppression of drug addiction. She's also published 17 children's books, approaching the issue of racism in a straightforward but hopeful way to create inspiring messages for children all over the world.
