Demna, also known as Demna Gvasalia, is a Georgian fashion designer. He is the current creative director of Balenciaga, and he is also the co-founder of Vetements. When he was younger, he was born in the Soviet Union. He was born to a Georgian Orthodox Christian family, and they would flee when he was 12 years old. They would escape the Russo-Georgian War in Abkhazia, but they would be forced to live in Tbilisi before eventually moving to Düsseldorf in 2001.
After his childhood, Demna would attend the Tbilisi State University and study international economics. He would also attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he would graduate with a master’s degree in Fashion Design in 2006. In that same year, he would collaborate with Walter van Beirendonck on their men’s collection. He would also join Maison Martin Margiela in 2009, where he would be responsible for the women’s collections for four years. After that, he would be appointed the senior designer of the women’s ready-to-wear collections at Louis Vuitton.
In 2014, Demna would launch Vetements with his brother, Guram. They would display their work at small gay clubs around Paris. His original purpose is that he wanted to subvert the status quo for high fashion. He presented his collection at Paris Fashion Week in 2014. He would be nominated for LVMH’s Young Fashion Designer Prize for three collections.
More recently, he would succeed Alexander Wang as the creative director of Balenciaga in 2015. He would also collaborate with Kanye West for his Donda album listening event at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He would also walk with stars at the 2021 Met Gala, where Kim Kardashian would wear his own design from head to toe. He has won numerous accolades for his fashion designs and continues to inspire the world with his work.
