Since 2009, Best Coast has been a major part of the indie pop industry. The duo formed in Los Angeles, and it consists of songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, Bethany Consentino and guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Bobb Bruno. Consentino was a former child actress who found her way into music when she was a teenager. She was formerly part of the band, Pocahaunted, but she would join Best Coast and begin to work on lo-fi demos with Bobb Bruno.
As a band, they have produced multiple different albums and work with multiple different labels. Their first album with label Mexican Summer was Crazy for You, which would be released in 2010. It would become an unexpected success commercially and they would be the subject of significant internet attention. Following that, they would travel and perform at multiple festivals around the world. Their second album, The Only Place, would be released in 2012 and they would find a cleaner sound this time, but still capture a significant part of their audience’s attention.
More recently, Best Coast released Fade Away, which was their EP from 2013. They would also release California Nights in 2015 as their third studio album. They recently released their fourth studio album, Always Tomorrow, in February of 2020. Their sound is loosely inspired by The Beatles and The Beach Boys, as well as the pop music of the 1950s and the 1960s. They are like a lo-fi 60s band that mirrors some of the trends of the surfing bands of the time. In their latest release, their cited inspirations came from Gwen Stefani, Sugar Ray, and the Gogo’s.
