Dr. Bernice King is the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., and an American minister. She was inspired to become a minister after watching a touching documentary about her father. From an early age, she has been active at speaking engagements and was invited at the age of 17 to speak at the United Nations.
Dr. Bernice King suffered several tragedies from a young age, but her decision to enter the ministry would change her life. King would attend Grinnell College in Iowa and then graduate from Spelman College in Atlanta with her degree in psychology. In 1985, she demonstrated in front of the South African embassy with her mother and brother against the apartheid in South Africa. At the age of 24, she would complete her Master’s degree in Divinity and receive a Juris Doctor from Emory University in 1990.
As a minister, she has spoken at several events and for several churches. She was the second woman to be ordained at the Ebenezer Baptist Church. King has also attended events such as the African-American Women’s Conference, where she spoke on the importance of giving kids the proper upbringing. For Bernice, she felt that becoming a minister was necessary and part of her family's legacy. Today, she speaks at several events and has won several awards for her lifetime commitment to equal rights and civil rights advocacy.
